Date: Two Thursdays : November 13th and 20th, 2008
6:30pm - 9:00pm

Opinion pieces are priceless opportunities to get your message out unfiltered and help sway public opinion to your side. But first you need a clear, concise, compelling op-ed that puts your message into play. Such pieces are designed to inform, arouse, cheer, motivate and engage readers in the stories behind the news. Learn how to compose a reasoned and interesting piece about local, regional and national issues. This class will cover strategy, structure and tone, suitable subjects for op-eds, finding your own voice and developing an eye for news hooks and other devices to capture audience attention. Some hands-on composition and critique will be included.

Instructor: Jeff Gillenkirk was a speechwriter and communications strategist for New York Governor Mario M. Cuomo, New York State Attorney General Robert Abrams, U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer and other major political figures, CEOs and heads of non-profit organizations and NGOs. A graduate of Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., he brings more than three decades of experience as a media strategist and expert writer to a wide variety of clients and causes. Check out his op-eds at www.yourmessage.org/op-eds.html.
