Fusing our sense of justice with our artistic talent will be the challenge of this class. These four sessions will help participants create persuasive posters, assist activists working with organizations to achieve social change goals, and to develop strategies for amplifying our voices. All are welcome regardless of activist or artistic experience. .
Brainstorming, image creation, working with organizations, choice of medium, poster layout and distribution will be covered in this workshop. Our small edition original posters will be reproduced using a low cost 4-color offset commercial poster service. The original art we create will utilize any medium students are comfortable with and have access to including pencil, crayon, watercolor gouache, acrylic, wood block, photography). The instructor will share his pwn image creation process with the class and the class will provide a sounding board for ideas before going to press.
Instructor: Doug Minkler is a renowned poster artist who has created striking works for a huge variety of community organizations, unions and social movements. His posters have been exhibited at the Smithsonian Institute, the National Design Museum, the DNC, and around the world in Germany, Italy and Australia. He has taught and lectured at UC-Davis, the California College of Arts and Crafts, New College of California and is a 2-time winner of the James Phelan Award for printmaking.
