This class is geared towards people with less than one year of experience doing media relations for nonprofit organizations. We will cover the basics of media relations including planning a media campaign, writing a press release, pitching stories to reporters, and creating and amplifying a clear message. You will receive a copy of MA’s Media How-To Guidebook.
Instructor: Karen Y. Stevenson is president of Core Communications, a media advocacy firm specializing in message development and helping community groups to engage the media effectively. Her professional career began at KPIX-TV in San Francisco, where she worked as an award-winning producer for a live, one-hour daily talk show.

 | Spokesperson Training So you've framed your issue, developed your messages and honed your key talking points, now what? In this course we'll develop our skills as spokespeople and prepare for interviews of all types. We’ll master the print interview, covering the gamut from telephone interviews to stand ups, to one-on-one ‘coffee dates’ with reporters and even explore the Editorial Board meeting scenario. On the radio and TV side we’ll take it all on. From pre-taped to live, radio call-in to debate, talk show to news magazine format, local TV news stand-up to remote satellite cable show, you’ll prep and practice a range of electronic media interviews, including on camera work. What to wear, how to make the most of body language and vocal intonation, and tips for staying focused since there is no such thing as off the record! Come with talking points and sound bytes ready!
